Being Physically Active May Increase Pain Tolerance

People who are physically active may develop a higher tolerance for pain compared to those who are sedentary, a recent study has discovered. The highest levels of physical activity also corresponded with the greatest increase in pain tolerance.

In the study, researchers analyzed data from over 10,700 adults. They used questionnaires to determine physical activity levels and also utilized a cold water test to measure one aspect of pain tolerance.

All data was collected at baseline and again 7-8 years later. The results consistently showed that physical activity was linked to better pain tolerance in both men and women.

The researchers acknowledged that there were limitations to their study, including a limited ability to test for all aspects of pain tolerance, but believe that their findings “suggest increasing PA [physical activity] levels as a possible non-pharmacological pathway towards reducing or preventing chronic pain.”

10 Common Pesticides Linked to Parkinson’s Disease

New research has identified ten commonly used pesticides that may contribute to the development of Parkinson’s disease. Each was found to be directly toxic to dopaminergic neurons, a group of neurons that degenerates with Parkinson’s, causing some of its hallmark symptoms.

The pesticides included three herbicides (diquat, endothall, and trifluralin), four insecticides (dicofol, endosulfan, naled, and propargite), and three fungicides (basic and pentahydrate copper sulfate and folpet).

In the study, researchers used data from 829 participants with Parkinson’s disease and 824 controls to determine pesticide exposure. Then, they tested 39 pesticides with links to Parkinson’s for toxicity to dopaminergic neurons. Of the 10 that were found to be toxic, 8 are still registered for use by the EPA.

The biggest risks from pesticide exposure are associated with agricultural workers and those living in agricultural areas who may be directly exposed to the chemicals. However, buying USDA Organic produce (or the equivalent in other countries) is one way for consumers to avoid potentially harmful pesticide residue on food.

Clean Clothes, Zero Harsh Chemicals

You can get brighter whites and stain-free clothing by using a natural, non-toxic laundry detergent.

Most laundry detergents contain chemicals like SLS, artificial dyes, and optical brighteners that are linked to serious health effects, including skin irritation. Many also make use of synthetic fragrances, which are linked to allergic reactions and other health concerns, to mask odors rather than getting rid of them. Truly Free is a company that does things differently by making a hypoallergenic and non-toxic laundry detergent that is highly effective. The formula is based around their cutting-edge plant-based Quadrasalt technology and is guaranteed to remove stains (and odors) without harming fabrics.

Thyme rounds out the list by fighting microbes that may cause digestive upset. (More)

Health Risks of PFAS + Why They Are Likely in Your Home

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals commonly referred to as “forever chemicals.” They are found in numerous everyday products, including nonstick cookware and stain-resistant fabrics, and are infamous for accumulating and remaining in the environment for a yet undetermined amount of time. PFAS are currently linked to health issues like increased cancer risk, infertility, and decreased immune function. (More)

Probiotics May Relieve Gout Flare-Ups

An estimated 41 million people around the world suffer from gout, a type of arthritis that causes severe pain, swelling, stiffness, and tenderness in joints. There is currently no cure for gout, but medication is commonly used to prevent or treat flare-ups. Now, researchers have discovered that a specific probiotic strain— Ligilactobacillus salivarius—  may help reduce gout episodes in individuals with the disease and possibly reduce the use of gout-related drugs. Oil and Gas Production Contributes to Early Deaths, Asthma Attacks

Air pollution from oil and gas production appears to have “substantial adverse impacts” on human health, according to recent research. The pollutants nitrogen oxide, fine particulate matter, and ozone— all from oil and gas production— are believed to have contributed to 7,500 excess deaths, 410,000 asthma attacks, and 2,200 new cases of childhood asthma in the U.S. over the span of one year.
